Ingredients:
- 3 cups self-rising flour
- 1/2-3/4 cup of crisco (don't go generic on this) I don't really measure it, other than just scooping it out with my hand (as you can see in the picture), so I just estimated how much I got.
- 3/4-1 cup of buttermilk (did you know you can make buttermilk if you don't have any, just add 1 Tbsp of vinegar to milk, I use skim milk)
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 500 degrees F.
- Put the flour in a mixing bowl, and make a well in the middle of the flour.
- Add the crisco and the buttermilk in the well. Mix it all together with your hand, making sure to incorporate some of the flour with the crisco and buttermilk.
- Once it is mixed well, start folding over some of the flour from the outside in. Mix until the flour is incorporated well (you will have a lot of unused flour left over).
- Start pinching off a little at a time an knead a little in your hand to make the desired shape. My mom always used the back of her knuckles to sqush (yes, it's a word) it down just a little after she put them in the pan.
- Bake in the oven until golden brown. (I would say 15-20 minutes, just watch them)
